ELECTIVE MODULE

Restorative Yoga with Angelina Fox

Friday, May 30 from 6-8pm
Saturday, May 31 from 9am-6pm
Sunday, June 1 from 9am-6pm

Restorative yoga is the art of being, not doing. Restorative yoga sets the body up in positions to passively stretch while being supported by props. This extra support from the props releases the mind from trying to keep the body engaged or to work through unnecessary tension so the mind and the body can work toward full rest and rejuvenation. Restorative yoga helps the nervous system to remember how to rest when stress is high, stimulates circulation, and releases tension.

In today’s culture of overachieving and multi-tasking, it is little wonder that most people indicate having moderate to high levels of stress. Stress can present itself physically in the body through tension headaches, muscle or joint pain, fatigue, and a foggy mind. Restorative yoga allows the body to rest

and reap the benefits of the functions of the parasympathetic nervous system.

This restorative yoga teacher training will offer insight into the foundational restorative yoga postures and how they can be sequenced to offer full-length and short restorative yoga practices. This training is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about restorative yoga, build a restorative yoga practice, and yoga teachers who want to offer a gentler practice in their classes and with private students. Each session will offer a combination of theory, application, practice, and teaching.

Learning Objectives:

  • Create a nurturing and well-rounded restorative yoga class for a group or private yoga session
  • Teach restorative yoga effectively in person and online
  • Breakdown the set-up of key restorative yoga postures and understand modifications, benefits, and contraindications
  • Learn to appropriately support different bodies with props for deep rest
  • Discover ways to utilize at home items as props
  • Learn to transform almost any asana posture into a restorative posture
  • Cultivate language and insight to build sequences around body areas, desired effect, or general sense of calm
  • Investigate spinal alignment to determine how to best support the body
  • Work with different techniques to guide and support students through their rest
  • Uncover breathing and meditation techniques to bolster the sequence’s desired effect and support relaxation
  • Learn different ways to sequence and cue a class based on your environment and availability of props
  • Recognize when students are uncomfortable and how to best assist them verbally and with prop adjustments
  • Gain an understanding of the basics of how the nervous system works and how the parasympathetic nervous system functions for stress management

Participants:

  • Will participate in two restorative yoga practices led by lead trainer
  • Will display knowledge of building a well-rounded restorative yoga class and teach a restorative yoga sequence of their creation
  • Will demonstrate how to offer variations, use of props, and assistance to students during a restorative yoga class

ELECTIVE MODULE

Trauma Informed Yoga with Maryam Ovissi & Heather Hagaman

August 15-17

$350

$450 with Additional Mentoring

Friday, August 15 from 10am-5pm
Saturday,  August 16 from 10am-5pm
Sunday, August 17 from 10am-5pm

This training program is designed for yoga teachers, body workers, therapists, medical professionals, substance abuse counselors, social workers, teachers, first responders and anyone working in the field of trauma recovery.

This is a one-of-a-kind training that blends the ancient wisdom of Yoga with the modern science of Trauma recovery. Yoga has recognized the necessity of befriending all the layers of our being to achieve peace in this life. The greatest path to healing from trauma is through the process of befriending the whole being.

We will share the modern history of trauma and dive deeply into the science of how all the body’s systems are impacted. We will illuminate the Yogic perspective on trauma through a discussion based on key segments of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras that speak directly to trauma and to the process of finding harmony with trauma and therefore one’s self. The nervous system and the brain structures will be studied, both through the framework of modern medicine and the Yogic energetic model. You will learn about advances in neuroscience and epigenetics that have given us a better understanding of how trauma changes our nervous system, brain development, self-regulation, and capacity to stay focused and in tune with others. This understanding is outlined in The Polyvagal Theory. Through our combined experience of over 25 years of work with clients, we have tested yoga tools and found how effective they are in transforming despair into hope.

You will learn yogic tools to guide the journey into wholeness for all people. “We are on the verge of becoming a trauma-conscious society. Almost every day one of my colleagues publishes another report on how trauma disrupts the working of the mind, brain and body.” said Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, MD, a leading authority on Trauma Recovery.

We take this data seriously and we work tirelessly to develop and apply more effective ways to keep Yoga safe and therapeutic, whether in a group class or a private session. We strive to guide all teachers to become trauma-informed in order to create the safest and most accessible yoga experiences. Heather and Maryam are now offering the latest, innovative evidence-based training that demonstrates the necessity of the integration of Yoga into the treatment of trauma healing. You will walk away feeling empowered in how to create a safe and grounded environment for all.

About the Instructors: Maryam Ovissi  IAYT, E-RYT500, is a certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and under the tutelage of Bhekaji Lynch, she received her 500-hour Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) accreditation with Yoga Alliance. Maryam’s personal mission as a teacher of Yoga is to provide an opportunity for her students to have access to tools that allow self-healing, self-empowerment and self-realization. Her unique style provides space for multi-level practitioners to journey through Yoga in group, semi-private and private classes. In her private Yoga teaching, Yogic tools are offered that serve the person and their personal intentions.

Moved by the declining mental and physical health statistics of Americans today, Maryam created Beloved Yoga’s signature Befriending Yoga Therapy program to offer classes that serve a range of clients and a variety of health conditions. Trauma-informed teachers offer private and semi-private classes designed for a variety of health issues including lower back pain, hip and knee replacements, spinal fusions, invasive surgeries, traumatic physical injuries, chronic conditions, emotional stress and mental imbalances from cognitive to stress-induced confusion. Maryam’s specialties in trauma lie in her experience with medical trauma, including invasive surgeries, cancer and all the layers of treatment around cancer, as well as complex medical conditions that create medical trauma. Maryam co-developed Befriend the Journey with Cancer with Anu Kaur.

Heather Hagaman MA C-IAYT is the Director of Beloved Yoga’s  Befriending Therapeutic Programs with a specialization in Trauma and Recovery in Reston. She has a Masters in Psychology from Marymount University and is a board certified Yoga Therapist.  Heather also holds a Certification in Trauma Sensitive Yoga from David Emerson and Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk (Kripalu).

Heather is a pioneer in the new field of Yoga and Trauma Recovery. This emerging field utilizes Trauma Informed Yoga and Meditation to help people start to move beyond PTSD, Addiction, Anxiety, and Depression and start to build fulfilling lives.  There are numerous studies now that show that Yoga compliments addictions and trauma recovery. Heather has worked extensively with psychotherapists and health practitioners to assist clients in reaching their wellness goals.

Heather believes that recovering from trauma requires healing of the mind, the body and the breath. Many people in addictions recovery have experienced traumatic stressors from childhood.  These events can create havoc in one’s nervous system and set up a maladaptive coping system for years to come.  Yoga helps to move the stuck energy in the body; it helps release the issues that live in our tissues. Once released, a person can begin to learn yogic tools to self regulate and to self soothe.  Yoga helps one to pause and not run from the feelings but flow with them as energies.  Yogic tools help the person to stay present, breathe and grounded rather than to reach and run to the outside world for an instant fix.

By creating a non-judgmental and confidential environment, Heather holds sacred space to help her clients connect and feel safe in their own bodies. This space encourages clients to experience inner connections and a way back to wholeness. Clients are given enormous control in their sessions and are encouraged to approach their practice with curiosity and mindfulness. This approach assists her clients in developing body awareness through intereoception (the sense of the physiological condition of the body) to cultivate the feeling of being grounded and embodied. Grounding invites you to sense your body, notice your tension patterns, and surrender the weight of your physical body into gravity to feel the support of the earth. As a resource for trauma recovery, grounding can help you reclaim a sense of safety, feel rooted in the present moment, and strengthen your resilience.

Anatomy of the human body relevant to yoga: This section of the module would delve into the specific structures of the human body that are integral to the practice of yoga, such as the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Understanding how these components work individually and together during yoga poses is crucial for alignment, balance, and movement. It would also cover the role of the nervous system in controlling posture and movement, as well as how yoga can influence the body's flexibility and strength.

Physiology of breath and its importance: In this part, the focus would be on the respiratory system, explaining how breathing operates on a physiological level, including the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It would highlight the importance of pranayama, or breath control, in yoga practice, which is essential for managing energy levels, reducing stress, and improving mental clarity. The module might also explore how different breathing techniques can affect the autonomic nervous system and the overall state of mindfulness.

Common injuries and how to prevent them: Here, the discussion would center on typical injuries that can occur during yoga practice, such as muscle strains, joint stress, or ligament tears, particularly in areas like the lower back, knees, shoulders, and neck. The module would offer insight into the causes of these injuries and provide guidance on how to prevent them through proper technique, alignment, and the use of modifications and props. The ancient sadhus recognized early that in order to develop the spirit, they also needed to maintain the container of spirit, or the body. They did not separate the two as we have done in the West. Hatha Yoga evolved through the centuries out of this understanding. This continues today as we bring in a modern understanding of physiology and its relationship to the mind. But most often modern science simply confirms what the ancient yogi’s already knew from thousands of years of practice and observation. In this training we will explore the mind/body relationship through the varied practices of Hatha Yoga.

Through this 20-hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training Module, the participants will learn:

  • History & Philosophy of Hatha Yoga
  • Fundamentals and purpose of the asanas
  • Pose/posture families, not just the basic forms.
  • Tips for teaching the postures.
  • How to bring yoga philosophy into asana classes
  • Vinyasa Krama – How to sequence a Hatha class
  • Teaching Methodology

Yoga has undergone a long history of evolution in its ideas, with contributions from many streams and influences. And it has evolved and adjusted to meet the needs of the times in which its ideas were undergoing transformation.

This is why understanding something of the history and context of the times is important to understanding the ideas, concepts, and practices fully — especially as we look to how yoga continues to evolve to meet the needs of our current times. That has always been the nature of yoga since its inception, and yoga has always been able to maintain its spiritual core and essence in the process, while the understanding of ‘spirituality’ itself has deepened and expanded to become more inclusive and suited to ‘this-worldly’ spirituality that looks to our personal and collective good and well-being in this life, rather than only seeking liberation from it.

The purpose of this module is to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the key ideas of yoga as they have developed, especially with an eye to understanding their relevance to our own times, and the lives we live today, including:

Exploration of Yoga's Origins: This module would cover the historical journey of yoga, from its earliest mentions in Vedic texts to its evolution through various schools and philosophies in ancient India. It would include an overview of seminal works such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita, highlighting their contributions to yoga's spiritual and ethical principles.

Different Yoga Philosophies and Paths: This section would delve into the diverse philosophical foundations of yoga, such as the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy with a focus on Sankhya and Vedanta. It would also discuss the different paths of yoga, like Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action/service), Jnana (knowledge), and Raja (the royal path, including Ashtanga or the eight limbs of yoga).

Modern Yoga Movement: The module would trace the development of yoga in the 20th and 21st centuries, examining how it spread to the West and transformed into the various styles practiced today. It would address the influences of key figures in bringing yoga to the global stage and discuss contemporary issues, including the commercialization of yoga and the importance of maintaining the integrity of yoga's traditional
